The Montana Department of Corrections contracts with a regional prison and two private contract facilities to assist with the management of its inmate population. About 1,000 inmates are placed among these facilities.

The department’s Contract Placement Bureau is responsible for coordinating movement of inmates, ensuring contract compliance and oversight, providing technical assistance to contracted staff, conducting onsite reviews, and continuing to develop parity and consistency among all contracted and state-operated facilities.
