Correctional Officers help ensure the institution is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment and rehabilitation of the inmate population.

  • Supervise adult male felons while in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off property. Correctional Officers are responsible for a wide variety of security duties relative to the safe, orderly and cost effective operation grounds, performing on including, but not limited to, conducting thorough inspections and searches of inmates, buildings and grounds,   performing security observation, preparing documentation regarding institutional matters such as incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts and logs, operating security equipment, recognizing critical behavior, restraining and controlling offenders, and responding to emergencies.
  • Enforce and follow rules and regulations including but not limited to written and/or oral directives, post orders, and special instructions in addition to policies and procedures which dictate daily, routine and emergency procedures.
  • Serve as a member of the Unit Management Team to oversee all aspects of the basic needs and welfare of adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off property. Participate in case management and classification procedures.
  • Provide intervention for adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison by facilitating and/or overseeing counseling, medical care, first aide, clothing & laundry, janitorial and housekeeping supplies, transportation of inmates, meals, movement, jobs and other services as required.

QUALIFICATIONS 

The knowledge, skills and abilities for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license are required. 
  • A background check including criminal records check, child/patient/offender abuse registries will be required prior to being hired.

Under the direction of the Montana State Prison Dental Clinic Manager, employed or contracted Dentists, and with oversight from the Department of Corrections Medical Services Manager,  the Dental Assistant supports a wide range of procedures—from routine cleanings to prosthetic dentistry.

PUBLIC SAFETY DIVISION

The MoveOps Bureau Chief leads and oversees all aspects of offender movement, institutional placement, classification, and community-based transitions within the correctional system. This includes managing secure transport, facility assignments, and strategic placement into pre-release centers, treatment programs, and transitional housing. The role also provides leadership and oversight of the offender classification process, ensuring accurate custody level determinations and programmatic placements. The Bureau Chief ensures safe, efficient, and rehabilitative movement of individuals across the correctional continuum, from intake to reentry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage statewide offender transport operations.
  • Oversee institutional placement decisions in alignment with classification, security, medical, and programmatic needs.
  • Lead a team of transport officers, placement coordinators, and support staff; ensure training, compliance, and performance standards are met.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the offender classification process, ensuring accurate custody level determinations and programmatic placements aligned with departmental policy and public safety goals.
  • Supervise classification staff and ensure consistency, fairness, and legal compliance in all classification decisions across facilities.
  • Collaborate with facility wardens, internal subject matter experts and external partners to optimize bed space and reduce bottlenecks.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to movement operations, ensuring alignment with legal mandates, transport data and departmental goals.
  • Monitor population trends, including daily county jail holds, and provide strategic recommendations to executive leadership on capacity planning and institutional flow.
  • Ensure safety, accountability, and transparency in all movement-related operations.

The MoveOps Bureau Chief reports to the Public Safety Division Chief.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Outstanding leadership and change management skills;
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills;
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills;

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, behavioral sciences, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in corrections, institutional operations, or offender management.
  • At least two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience in a correctional or public safety setting.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex logistics or population movement systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with offender classification systems and institutional placement protocols.

  • In a correctional environment, all staff receive specific training in the areas of security and correctional procedures and there are many security measures in place. FLATHEAD VALLEY PRERELEASE CENTER

JOB OVERVIEW - This position is responsible for the overall safety and security of offenders, staff and visitors of the Flathead Valley Prerelease Center. Security Staff help ensure the institution is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment and rehabilitation of the offender population.

Security staff supervise adult male felons while in the custody of Flathead Valley Prerelease Center. Security staff are responsible for a wide variety of security duties relative to the safe, orderly and cost effective operation of this community corrections facility. Security staff perform a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to, conducting thorough inspections and searches of offender, buildings and grounds,  performing security observation, preparing documentation regarding facility matters such as incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts and logs, operating security equipment, recognizing critical behavior, restraining and controlling offenders,  conducting substance use testing duties, and responding to emergencies.

Security staff enforce and follow rules and regulations including, but not limited to written and/or oral directives and special instructions in addition to policies and procedures which dictate daily, routine and emergency procedures. 

Security staff provide intervention for adult male felons in the custody of the Flathead Valley Reentry Center by facilitating and/or overseeing facility entrance security, first aid, janitorial and housekeeping duties completed by offenders, transportation of offenders, offender movement both inside and out of the facility, as well as other services as required.

UPON HIRE 

  • Successful completion of on-the-job training.
  • Annual TB testing is mandatory.

Minimum Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Climbing. 
  • Lift up to 50 pounds. 
  • Walking. 
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, or dragging heavy furniture, equipment or people with assistance up to 100 pounds with assistance. 
  • Ability to respond to verbal communication, alarms, telephones, and radio communication equipment. 
  • Patrolled terrain may be uneven. 
  • Work patrolling buildings or grounds may occur in all types of weather. 
  • Work may occur during irregular hours or at night. 
  • Regular contact with offenders, other employees and the public is required.  
  • Respond in the event of an emergency, which may include working long hours, mandatory overtimes, reporting to work prior to the start of the shift or staying after the shift normally ends. 
  • Work may be stressful. 
  • Must remain alert and responsive throughout their shift.   
  • Able to stand for long periods of time. 
  • Must be physically and legally able to drive a vehicle. 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license are required. 
  • One year of experience in a security-related field is preferred.
  • A background check including criminal records check, child/patient/offender abuse registries will be required prior to being hired.
