SECURITY STAFF

FLATHEAD VALLEY RE-ENTRY CENTER

KALISPELL, MT

Security staff are responsible for the overall safety and security of offenders, staff and visitors of the Flathead Valley Prerelease Center. Security Staff help ensure the institution is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment and rehabilitation of the offender population.

  • Security staff supervise adult male felons while in the custody of Flathead Valley Prerelease Center. 
  • Security staff are responsible for a wide variety of security duties relative to the safe, orderly and cost effective operation of this community corrections facility. Security staff perform a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to, conducting thorough inspections and searches of offender, buildings and grounds,  performing security observation, preparing documentation regarding facility matters such as incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts and logs, operating security equipment, recognizing critical behavior, restraining and controlling offenders,  conducting substance use testing duties, and responding to emergencies.
  • Security staff enforce and follow rules and regulations including, but not limited to written and/or oral directives and special instructions in addition to policies and procedures which dictate daily, routine and emergency procedures. 
  • Security staff provide intervention for adult male felons in the custody of the Flathead Valley Reentry Center by facilitating and/or overseeing facility entrance security, first aid, janitorial and housekeeping duties completed by offenders, transportation of offenders, offender movement both inside and out of the facility, as well as other services as required.

Minimum Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Climbing 
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Walking 
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, or dragging heavy furniture, equipment or people with assistance up to 100 pounds with assistance 
  • Ability to respond to verbal communication, alarms, telephones, and radio communication equipment
  • Patrolled terrain may be uneven
  • Work patrolling buildings or grounds may occur in all types of weather
  • Work may occur during irregular hours or at night
  • Regular contact with offenders, other employees and the public is required
  • Respond in the event of an emergency, which may include working long hours, mandatory overtimes, reporting to work prior to the start of the shift or staying after the shift normally ends
  • Work may be stressful
  • Must remain alert and responsive throughout their shift
  • Able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be physically and legally able to drive a vehicle 

QUALIFICATIONS

The knowledge, skills and abilities for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license are required. 
  • One year of experience in a security-related field is preferred.
  • A background check including criminal records check, child/patient/offender abuse registries will be required prior to being hired. 

Alternative combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
